Twitter suppressed stories based on requests from both Dems and GOP in 2020 but favored Liberals: report

Requests to Twitter from both the Trump White House and the platform’s Biden campaign to delete certain tweets were honored by the company during the 2020 presidential election, but there were more opportunities for Democrats to seek censorship, journalist Matt said Taibbi in a Twitter thread Friday night.

Twitter staffers tended to be liberal, meaning Democrats had more opportunities to solicit favors for the platform because it was contact-based, Taibbi wrote in a thread he dubbed “Twitter Files” and the CEO Elon Musk retweeted.

“In an early conception, Twitter more than lived up to its mission statement, giving people the power to create and share ideas and information instantly without barriers,” Taibbi wrote, adding, “However, over time, the company was slowly being forced to add these barriers. Some of the first language control tools were designed to fight spam and financial fraudsters.”

He added, “Slowly, over time, Twitter employees and executives found more and more uses for these tools. Outsiders began asking the company to manipulate the language too: a little at first, then more often, then all the time.”

He said “celebrities and unknowns alike” could be removed “at the behest of a political party,” but: “This system was not balanced. It was based on contacts. Because Twitter was and is mostly populated with people of a political orientation, there were more channels, more opportunities to complain, openly to the left (well, Democrats) than to the right.”
