Top Dog and Cat Names of 2022 Revealed: Report

When it comes to naming pets, American cat and dog owners appear to be more likely to choose certain names than others.

At least, that’s what Rover.com found when researchers analyzed pet profiles on the kennel website for its annual dog and cat name reports.

The pet website identified the “Top 100” pet names assigned to male and female dogs and cats nationwide.

“To better understand the meaning behind these names and what they can tell us about the people, places and stories that have shaped the past year, we dug deep into Rover’s database of over a million pet owners to find the most popular dog to investigate [and cat] Names of 2022,” the pet website wrote in one of its reports.

Here’s a selection of the top 10 names that have appeared on Rover’s dog and cat name lists.

The most common male dog name on Rover’s list was Max, a name that has been popular for several years, according to the report.

Of the top 10, only three names are monosyllabic—Max, Bear, and Duke—while the rest are two-syllable, including Charlie, Milo, and Rocky.

The most common female dog name on Rover’s list was Luna, which the report “finally surpassed Bella as a top female dog name” this year.

However, Bella was not far behind, taking second place on Rover’s list.

Every name in Rover’s list of the top 10 female dog names is disyllable — meaning it’s made up of two syllables.

The most common male cat name on Rover’s list was Oliver, which may be a reference to Disney’s classic 1988 animated film Oliver & Company.

Other names in the top 10 that may have a pop culture connection include Simba, the protagonist of Disney’s “The Lion King,” and Loki, the mythical Norse god of mischief who was portrayed as an antihero in Marvel’s comic book and film franchise .

Eight of the names in Rover’s top 10 have two syllables, including Milo, Ollie and Jasper. Oliver is the only name that has three syllables while Jack is the only name that has one syllable.

Like their canine counterparts, the name Luna was a popular choice for female cats, according to Rover’s report.

Cat owners also seem to like two-syllable names for female cats, including Callie, Kitty, Cleo, and Chloe.

Nature-related names appeared in Rover’s top 10, including Lily and Bella. Also from Disney’s The Lion King, the name Nala is a top go-to.
