Philips debuts the Screeneo U5, an affordable 4K short-throw projector for under $1,800

At just 16 inches from any surface, the Philips Screeneo U5 transforms your wall into an impressive 150-inch 4K cinema that’s also 3D-ready! Setting up a movie theater in your compact home has never been easier, and at $1790 affordable…

The Philips Screeneo U5 follows its previous generation, the Screeneo U4, which debuted earlier this year and raised over $6.5 million in funding on Indiegogo. Producing projectors (no less than 4K projectors) for the mass market is expensive, prompting Philips to go down the crowdfunding route. The strategy has worked well for the company as it has allowed it to measure demand and create great devices for enthusiastic early adopters. While the U4 was pretty impressive on its own, the Screeneo U5 pushes its specs to the absolute limit, with larger projection, 2x higher resolution, almost 6x more brightness, and long-awaited support for Android TV and built-in ExpressVPN.

Ultra short throw projectors are absolutely perfect for smaller homes as they don’t need to be remotely located. Just set the projector up a foot from the wall and you pretty much have a large display that’s perfectly square (keystone corrected) and doesn’t get overshadowed every time someone walks across the room. The only downside to ultra short throw projectors has been their price – something Philips has continually worked to reduce with the Screeneo range, launched in 2013.

Put simply, the Screeneo U5 can throw a 120-inch projection onto a wall when held just 11 inches away… although you increase that distance to 16 inches (if you have the space) and you now have a whopping 150 inches in 4K -UHD projection that covers your entire peripheral field of vision. The U5 also boosts the projector’s brightness to an impressive 2,200 ANSI lumens, so you can watch movies or games day or night without seeing the picture. Worried about having to adjust the brightness every time? The U5 also has an auto dimming feature that adjusts the brightness based on the ambient light, protecting your eyesight.

Place the projector against a wall and the Screeneo U5 does the rest. Its keystone correction capabilities ensure your screen is perfectly square in every case, and a unique 8-point calibration system allows you to further tweak and adjust the image, to smooth out imperfections on your wall or projector screen.

The Screeneo U5 is a major upgrade from its predecessor, now with a 4K resolution, higher brightness and better colors. Dolby Vision and HDR 10 deliver better clarity, higher contrast, and richer colors, while FlowMotion 4 helps boost frame rates to make even older videos (or videos shot at lower frame rates) buttery smooth. The projector runs at a refresh rate of 60Hz, which makes it incredible for gaming too, and while 3D TVs have been dead for a while, the Screeneo U5 surprises with 3D projection capabilities, literally bringing the cinema to your home. The one feature that really sets the U5 apart is the fact that it packs an absolute punch in the audio department too. Equipped with 2.2 channels, 20 watts and a dedicated DSP, the U5 brings powerful Dolby Atmos audio to the viewing experience, combining larger than life audio with booming sound you wouldn’t really expect from a projector but will come to appreciate while watching movies, games or watch music videos.

Unlike the U4, which didn’t have a built-in smart TV interface, the U5 comes with AndroidTV and Chromecast, but raises the bar even higher with ExpressVPN preinstalled on the operating system for accessing geo-restricted content – a feature that it’s absolutely groundbreaking for most of today’s media devices. However, the presence of multiple ports, including 2 HDMI, 2 USB-A and a VGA port, ensures that you can connect everything from your old laptop to your USB stick to the U5 to access local files. There’s a LAN port to connect your projector to a wired network and a 3.5mm jack in case you have better speakers lying around. Just in case, the U5 is also equipped with Bluetooth 5.1, so you can also connect wireless speakers. Like its predecessor, the Screeneo U5 also has a multimedia remote control that makes navigating the user interface much easier.

The Philips Screeneo U5 is currently crowdfunded on Indiegogo and has raised almost $3 million at the time of writing this article. His previous campaigns, the ultra short throw projector Screeneo U4 and the pico projector Philips PicoPix Max, were also resounding successes and were supported by more than 25,000 supporters. While crowdfunding always comes with an inherent risk, it could be argued that Philips has a much higher brand equity than most campaign builders, so rest assured your money is in reliable hands. However, to sweeten the deal, Philips is offering its backers a 48% Cyber Week discount by letting them purchase the Screeneo U5 at a reduced price of $1,790 (EUR 1,699). The Screeneo U5 comes with a 2-year warranty and will ship from March 2023.
