Pantone unveils its 2023 color of the year

Explaining why 2023 will take us into the “Magentaverse,” Pantone chose Viva Magenta, a “powerful” red “rooted in nature,” as its 2023 Color of the Year.

At Art Basel Miami Beach, Pantone’s Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, was unveiled by Eley Cheng, Pantone Vice President and CEO, and Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute – both wearing garments that hint at the vibrant shade to be announced .

For 24 years, Pantone’s forecasters have chosen a color of the year following a process in which their experts “scour the world for new color influences,” looking at “films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all fields.” of design , popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles and socio-economic conditions,” says Pantone.

“We try to have [the colour] represent the attitude, lifestyle and dreams that exist around the world at any given time,” says Cheng.

“This year’s Color of the Year is a call for courage, an invitation to experiment and share. This color combines the warmth of the natural world with the endless rich possibilities of digital space. It deepens our way of self-expression. That gives us the security and motivation to stay open.”

Pressman adds that the choice of color “serves as an expression of mood and attitude on the part of consumers. A color that reflects what we experience, a color that permeates all areas of design; a color that will resonate around the world, a color that reflects what people are looking for, what they think they need, this color can hope to find an answer to that.”

This year’s shade, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta, is a response to the pandemic years, which Pressman describes as marked by “uncertainty.”

“As virtual worlds become an increasingly important part of our daily lives, we draw inspiration from nature and reality,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta comes from the red family and is inspired by the red of the cochineal, one of the most valuable dyes in the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest known in the world. Rooted in the original, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us with the original matter. It summons the forces of nature, electroplates our spirit and helps us build our inner strength.”

Collaboration between Pantone and Hydrow

The coming together of man and machine is welcomed with the new Color of the Year visuals, where Pantone collaborated with creative partner Huge on a design experiment using the generative AI tool Midjourney, “which explores the relationship – the tensions – between new technology and humans Creativity.” The key visual, Pantone explains, “serves as an invitation to explore an optimistic and never-ending new ecosystem called the Magentaverse.

These include a special edition Motorola Edge 30 Fusion phone, as well as a broader global partnership with parent company Lenovo; a version of Hydrow’s Wave Rower exerciser; and new wallpaper and fabric designs by independent designers for Spoonflower.
