Following its release, The Callisto Protocol’s performance was one of the main reasons for its mixed reviews from players and critics, with most of its reviews on Steam highlighting the performance issues it faced from day one.
Although we were impressed with what we saw towards the game’s release, according to some sources, such as Eurogamer (opens in new tab), these issues have led some gamers to believe that The Callisto Protocol feels almost unplayable on PC, as it stutters regardless of the system. For Xbox Series X players, the issues are to a lesser extent but still noticeable and impacting the overall Callisto Protocol experience.
One of the main issues is that shaders aren’t precompiled, which ensures that you’ll experience severe frame drops and visual stuttering every time something new is shown, regardless of CPU, but the issue can still exist on older and less powerful models be worse.
For the Xbox Series X, however, the performance issues are an issue, but the bigger gripe is the lack of one feature: ray-traced reflections, which deviate from pushing the game’s realism. Although all systems offer a choice of performance modes, The Callisto Protocol performance on Xbox Series X and PC requires a patch update.
Performance on the PS5 appears to be much better, which may be due to the fact that after the credits of The Callisto Protocol, more than 150 developers from the PlayStation Visual Arts Studio helped develop it. This Sony studio focuses on motion capture and cinematics and supports other studios. This may mean that the Callisto protocol is better optimized on PS5 than on PC and Xbox.
We are aware that some users are experiencing PC stuttering issues. We have a patch coming in a few hours to improve performance, with a number of additional updates on the way.December 2, 2022
A day after launch, developer Striking Distance Studios released a patch update to address some of the performance issues players were reporting on PC and promised several additional updates would follow. The hotfix should address and fix the issues caused by stuttering.
Originally reported by forbes (opens in new tab), the current patch has helped with some of the larger stuttering issues, but there are still common micro-stutters that aren’t as severe but detract from the experience. In upcoming updates, Stringking Distance says there will be performance improvements on PC and Xbox Series X, but a timeline on when more updates can be expected has yet to be released.
