Hudson Valley-based startup Den Outdoors sells home kits for small houses and cabins that can be added to properties.

These additional housing units, also known as ADUs, have grown in popularity during the pandemic as Americans reinvent homeownership.

ADUs, including Den-designed homes, have a different address than the main house on the property.

Den has 38 basic floorplans, but customers can customize their ADUs to suit their needs, founder Michael Romanowicz told Insider.

To begin the process, they can choose a home kit from the company’s website.

The company’s house kits provide customers with detailed blueprints and step-by-step instructions on how to build.

Customers can choose between two different home building kits: the starter kit ($199) and the complete package ($1,995 to $4,195).

The starter kit includes information on height, foundation requirements, and window and door installations.

The complete package includes everything included in the starter kit in addition to roof and floor plans, a 3D model, electrical and plumbing details and equipment to complete the project.

The company recently began offering a service that, for an additional fee, streamlines the home building process by sourcing materials, builders, and contractors.

Floor plans range from 200 square feet to over 2,000 square feet.

For each of Den’s projects, the average price per square foot is approximately $240.

Den’s most popular model, the A-frame house, has two stories with high ceilings and lots of living space.

The 1,000-square-foot A-frame home features two bedrooms—a bedroom with bunk beds and a loft master suite.

It also has two bathrooms, a kitchen and a linen closet.

The second best seller is the eastern farmhouse. The model is a 1,632 square foot home with three bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms.

According to Den, the materials needed to build the house can be sourced locally, making it one of the easier models to build.

The model features two bedrooms, a full bathroom, a kitchen, a linen closet and floor-to-ceiling windows.
