2023 March Madness, Conference Tournaments, Auto Bids: Drake Wins Missouri Valley Crown

USATSI

The number of teams that have secured applications for the 2023 NCAA tournament rose to five on Sunday. Three conferences crowned the tournament winners, but the number of leagues participating in the post-season promotion hit double digits.

Kennesaw State beat Liberty 67-66 to win the Atlantic Sun Tournament and win its first NCAA tournament appearance — all just three seasons after a 1-28. In the Big South, UNC-Asheville bested Campbell 77-73 to earn a spot in the Big Dance. Eventually, Drake Bradley dominated 77-51 to win the Missouri Valley Tournament and earn the program’s second NCAA tournament appearance under fifth-year coach Darian DeVries.

These three joined OVC’s Southeast Missouri and NEC’s Fairleigh Dickinson as automatic qualifiers at the end of the first weekend of March. Seven other conference tournaments were also held on Sunday, and eight will be played on Monday when the Southern Conference and Sun Belt each crown the champions.

With teams struggling to extend their seasons and Big Dance bids at stake, it’s officially the best time of the year in college basketball. Although the Power Conference tournaments are only a few days away, many of the ongoing tournaments are for one-bid leagues. They’re sure to produce plenty of happy and chaotic scenes to mark the days leading up to Selection Sunday.
